What Is This Study and Why Does It Change the Rules of the Game?
The report “How People Are Really Using Generative AI Now” by Harvard Business Review, published recently (April 2025), presents fascinating insights into how we are actually using AI in 2025.
The Central Insight from the HBR Report
In short, the report highlights a shift from technical use cases toward emotional and developmental ones (I actually wrote a post on exactly this topic — “Does Artificial Intelligence Affect Our Happiness at Work?” — feel free to check it out).
The study surveys 100 common generative AI use cases — such as therapy and emotional support, and creative thinking — and organizes them into six core domains.
The Six Use Domains Examined in the Study
- Personal and professional support
- Learning and education
- Creativity and leisure
- Technical assistance and problem-solving
- Content creation and editing
- Search and research
What Makes This Study Unique?
The HBR study — How People Are Using AI in 2025 — offers a fresh perspective on the role artificial intelligence plays in our lives, emphasizing its potential to support personal well-being, learning, and self-development. We are no longer using AI merely to draft emails or summarize meetings. On the contrary, we are increasingly turning to AI for emotional support, personal planning, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and our decisions. As a result, AI is becoming a partner in personal growth, not just a tool for task efficiency.
How Was the Data Collected?
One of the distinctive aspects of this study is the collection method the researchers used. Rather than relying on surveys or structured interviews, the researchers analyzed thousands of conversations in professional forums such as Reddit. This approach makes it possible to understand the real-life use cases people actually engage with, rather than what they might report in a formal survey.
The Top 5 Use Cases for 2025
🫂 Emotional Support and Self-Care
More and more people are turning to AI for supportive conversations, coping with anxiety, feelings of loneliness, or gaining a fresh perspective. AI serves as an emotional companion — always available, non-judgmental, and capable of providing a genuine sense of being heard and understood.
🗓️ Life Organization and Self-Management
Many users rely on AI as a life-management tool: daily planning, habit tracking, goal-setting, and building personalized routines. In other words, AI functions as a personal coach — one that helps create structure and achieve personal goals.
🧐 Finding Meaning and Self-Reflection
Using AI as a tool for introspection helps users clarify their values, examine life goals, and make meaningful decisions. It also provides a space for deep thinking and the development of personal insights.
📚 Personalized Learning
AI acts as a private tutor, delivering tailored explanations, practice exercises, and immediate feedback. It supports independent learning, aids in understanding complex subjects, and encourages personal development.
⌨️ Code Generation and Learning to Program
The use of AI for writing code, solving programming challenges, and learning programming languages is on the rise. It makes software development accessible to newcomers while helping experienced developers streamline their workflows.

So What Does All of This Mean?
Beyond the technology itself, the ways people are using generative AI in 2025 reveal something deeper about our desire for order, meaning, being heard, and personal growth. It seems we are exhausted by the pace of change and the constant flood of information — living at an unsustainable speed (see also: Can Artificial Intelligence Help Us Manage Ourselves Better?).
When AI becomes the place where people process emotions, ask life’s big questions, plan their time, and learn anew — that says something about us. Perhaps the relentless pursuit of achievement isn’t what matters most? Maybe it’s time to listen more, to be more present with our families, or simply with ourselves? 🤔
Ultimately, the way we use AI today reveals something about who we are and who we aspire to become (this connects directly to a post I wrote on Does Artificial Intelligence Affect Our Happiness at Work?).
